For Thursday's class (4/17), Please read the first three chapters of Proverbs and skim the rest of the book. Choose three proverbs that you think is a particularly good examples of Hebrew contributions to human wisdom. Explain your choice, and note what makes the Proverb particularly memorable.
Proverbs 10:1, "A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother."
ReplyDeleteThis is similar to the Genesis verse that says women will be punished by pain caused by child-rearing. This one was very memorable to me because, as mothers, we want our child to be good humans. Mothers expect their children to do well all the time, but it's when they are "foolish," it ultimately hurts mom the most. As a mother, this verse brings comfort knowing that, "yes, it is my duty to hold you to a high standard, and yes, it is me who sometimes pays the consequence for foolishness." This verse also reads kind of like a promise that, as a mother, I will be with you through the difficult times as well.
Proverbs 11:4, "Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death."
We can all use this reminder sometimes because we focus so hard on making money and acquiring material things, but they don't make you a better person and cannot save you. We should focus on righteousness rather than $$$ and stuff.
Proverbs 20:1, "Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise."
Another good reminder for us college students. Need I say more?
Proverbs 11:21 Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished; But the posterity of the righteous will be delivered.
ReplyDeleteI like this proverb because it implies that the good will always be outnumbered. Yet, despite this, the verse assures us that we will be delivered. This a very hope filled verse.
Proverbs 17:28 Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.
I like this verse because it not only made me chuckle but it also teaches to curb the Impulsive mouth and think before you speak. Even a fool can be wise if they know when they should talk.
Proverbs 20:29 The glory of young men is their strength, And the splendor of old men is their gray head.
I like this proverb because it implies that while the young have strength, the old have authority. I think this also implies that we need to respect our elders as well.
(Proverbs 2:21-22) "For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it." Pretty sure the Hebrews learned this lesson the hardest. If their experiences give anything, it is the wisdom to know better than to rebel against God.
ReplyDelete(Proverbs 3:5) "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding." The history of the Hebrews is full of stories of how people had to depend on God or a prophet's understanding, often having to put away feelings of confusion because of not understanding. This proverb is a good bit of wisdom because there are many things in the world that cannot be understood with one's one understanding and one must trust a higher power to guide one through.
(Proverbs 9:6) "Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding." Pretty direct advice here. Like it was repeated many times in this book, the best way to be wise is to stop being an idiot.
3-3 I like this one because to me it is telling me that you keep the best traits closest to you. you don't let your best traits as a person escape you because whats left? you aren't going to be that kind person anymore and everyone wont want to be around you then and your fidelity or faithfulness because then you don't have an allegiance to anyone. if that is true then you could become an adulterer
ReplyDelete4-10 receive gods wisdom. ne you do that you will live for a lifetime or more than that, meaning that you will have an after life in the best place ever, heaven. not only that but you will be happy that you did and that you will have a abundant and fruitful one too.
5-3,4 the adulterers speak with the best and most influential words that one can imagine. in reality though they are stepping on thorns of their own lies and deceptions. and because of that becomes bitter and vengeful to the people that are around her that appear happier like the double edged sword and will cut everyone down that she meets in her path. and its true people that are unhappy in their relationship will try to ruin or destroy everyone that has a great and successful relationship with their sweet words and their back stabbing to the friend that they did it to. now that's not a friend.
